NCCEd: Neurocritical Care Education for Residents

Timing: Neurology Junior Boot Camp, Neurosurgery Intern Skills Month

Duration: 4 hours

Structure:

• Phase 1: 15-minute skills demonstration. Faculty members demonstrate the verbal communication methods and the exam techniques, and then demonstrate the apnea test procedure.
• Phase 2: 15-minute skills practice. Learners in each group will rotate practicing a portion of the exam. Each group’s faculty members will provide formative feedback. Each group’s learners who are watching their colleague practice will also help give formative feedback, thus incorporating some peer teaching.
• Phase 3: (time varies by number of participants) Brain death exam and apnea test skills testing. Separate stations for each. 25 minutes allotted per learner for testing and debriefing.
• Phase 4: 10-minute group session debrief and post-test.
