Chest X-ray with NGT placed

A small-bore NGT is placed. Is placement confirmed?

Yes, placement is confirmed.

Sorry! This one is close. We can tell that the NGT cuts straight across the proximal left mainstem bronchus and continues down. So, it's in the esophagus and not airways/lungs! However, the tip is still not past the G-E junction, nor is it below the diaphragm. We need to advance this further. (For this patient, this was actually intentional as part of a two-step process for advancing the tube.)

No, placement is NOT confirmed.

Correct! The NGT does not cross through the GE-junction nor cross below the diaphragm. It does, at least, clearly bisect the proximal left mainstem bronchus rather than follow the lumen within, which means it's in the esophagus and not airway.
